Background of the Study

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a common mental health condition among military veterans, triggered by exposure to traumatic events during service. Behavioral therapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), is widely regarded as an effective treatment for managing PTSD symptoms. At the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna State, behavioral therapy has been used to treat veterans suffering from PTSD. However, the effectiveness of this treatment approach in the Nigerian context, especially in a military setting, has not been fully appraised. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral therapy in managing PTSD among military veterans at this hospital.

Statement of the Problem

PTSD among military veterans is a significant issue, affecting their mental health, daily functioning, and quality of life. While behavioral therapy is known to be effective, there is limited research on its application in the Nigerian military context, particularly at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital. This study will assess how well behavioral therapy works in managing PTSD symptoms and improving the mental health of military veterans.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral therapy in managing PTSD symptoms among military veterans at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital.
  2. To assess the impact of behavioral therapy on veterans' overall mental health and well-being.
  3. To identify any challenges or limitations in providing behavioral therapy to military veterans in this hospital setting.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is behavioral therapy in managing PTSD symptoms among military veterans at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital?
  2. What impact does behavioral therapy have on the mental health and well-being of military veterans?
  3. What challenges are faced in delivering behavioral therapy to military veterans in the hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Behavioral therapy is not effective in managing PTSD symptoms among military veterans at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital.
  2. Behavioral therapy does not significantly improve the mental health and well-being of military veterans.
  3. There are no significant challenges in delivering behavioral therapy to military veterans in this setting.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on military veterans receiving behavioral therapy for PTSD at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna. Limitations include the possible variability in therapy effectiveness due to individual differences in veterans' experiences and mental health conditions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Behavioral Therapy: A form of psychotherapy that focuses on changing maladaptive behaviors and thought patterns.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): A mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event.
  • Military Veterans: Individuals who have served in the armed forces and may suffer from PTSD or other mental health conditions due to their experiences.
